Motion Controlled Mixer for Pharmaceuticals
Votec designed, built and commissioned the controls for a powder mixing system for use for a client in the pharmaceutical industry.
The system is required to pick up a container of powder, raise it to a working height and then process it through a recipe of mixing cycles with speed, direction, duration, stop positions and other factors, programmed as recipes via the HMI. Simply speaking, the machine mixes the pharmaceutical ingredients on a large scale – efficiently, safely and hygienically.
The control of the lifting and rotating motion required 7.5kW and 18.5kW drives respectively. These substantial motors are controlled by Siemens variable speed drives, which are fitted with advanced positioning control units.
The overall system is controlled by a small Siemens PLC and HMI. With encoders fitted to the motor shafts, the positioning system is able to operate with performance similar to a servo drive but using ordinary induction motors, resulting in a substantial saving in cost. The logging of process data is designed to be 21CFR Part 11 compliant.
